Centre artwork over furniture to provide balance in a room and be mindful of the reflection when hanging a mirror. Don’t hang too many pieces in a hallway, as it tends to make the hallway look crowded.
The short answer is yes all artwork will fade over time. Some mediums will fade quicker than others, works on paper such as watercolor will fade rapidly if exposed to direct light, whereas oil paintings will not deteriorate as quickly.
Ensuring the artwork is correctly framed using acid free paper and materials is important as well as having the artwork hung professionally. Exposure to sunlight can be combated by the use of non-reflective glass with UV protection when framed, however excessive exposure to sunlight should be avoided for any artwork. Hanging artwork on damp walls should also be avoided to prevent damage by mould.
Security hanging involves the attachment of special concealed fixings to the artwork to prevent easy removal from the wall. It is mostly used in commercial or hotel situations to avoid theft. It can also be used simply to prevent the artwork from being bumped or knocked out of alignment, especially in busy or narrow areas such as hallways and stairs.
There is no correct height, however a good rule of thumb is to have the centerline of the artwork at approximately eye level.
Sometimes called “French Hang”. It takes its name and appearance from the salons of the 19th century where dozens of artworks were squeezed together onto the walls as part of academic competitions, the salon-style hang looks effortlessly boho chic when done well, but can be very easy to mess up.
When undertaking a Salon Hang it is strongly recommended to have someone familiar with doing it, to at least give advice.
The short answer is to say, hang your artwork the way that will give you the most pleasure, but that said there are a few things to consider.
Very detailed or small works are best placed where you can get right up close, such as in a hallway. Bigger works often need to be viewed further away so often best over sofas or at the far end of the room. If you have 3 smaller artworks in different sizes or frames, cluster them in a close group one above and one to the side for a great effect.
If double hanging pictures one above the other, mostly a smaller frame is better above the bigger one, but again it’s entirely up to your taste, there is no absolute rule.
